Introduction:

The exercises below focus on the uses of function words. Function words are a closed class of words including articles, determiners, pronouns, and prepostions. While articles, determiners, and pronouns follow certain patterns and rules, it is often hard to explain how to use prepositions; it is often a question of collocations. With pronouns and determiners it has to do with gender, singular vs. plural, case, and the nature of the nouns they determine. The use of articles depends on definiteness and also on the nature of the nouns they determine.

Aims:

The exercises aim to make you aware of the problems related to the use of this closed class of words. By doing exercises on the various function words, you will become familiar with their behaviour in different contexts.
