Introduction:

The exercises below focus on contrastive differences between English and Norwegian. Even with two closely related languages such as English and Norwegian, differences abound both with regard to vocabulary and grammar. The exercises on false friends concentrate on words and expressions that look or sound similar in the two languages that do not necessarily have the same meaning. Another difference between English and Norwegian is the distinction made in English between it and there where Norwegian only has det. The various functions of it and there will also be explored.

Aims:

The exercises aim to give you some idea of what problems Norwegian learners may encounter. By raising your awareness in this area you may avoid making typically "Norwegian errors" when speaking or writing English.

Exercises:

  • False friends | #1 | #2 | #3 | #4 | #5 | #6 | #7 | #8 |
  • It and there | #1 | #2 | #3 | #4 | #5 | #6 | #7 | #8 |
