Introduction:

The exercises below focus on issues on the textual level, including word order within the sentence and cohesion across sentences. Although English is commonly called a Verb second language (i.e. the Verb typically comes after the Subject; the second element in a sentence), there are exceptions. Another issue of interest is how a text is glued together; when is a text cohesive, and what lingusitc elements are involved?

Aims:

The exercises aim to draw your attention to what elements are typically involved for a text to be cohesive. You will also get familiar with word order rules and how they operate in practice. This will enhance your skills when you yourself are going to write a text in English.

Exercises:

  • Cohesion | #1 | #2 | #3 | #4 | #5 | #6 | #7 | #8 |
  • Linking adverbials (Conjuncts) | #1 | #2 | #3 | #4 | #5 | #6 | #7 | #8 |
  • Word order | #1 | #2 | #3 | #4 | #5 | #6 | #7 | #8 |
